VATICAN – Study Seminar on 500 Years of Christianity in the Philippines and the Missionary Spirit

Rome (Agenzia Fides) – On October 30, the International Secretariat of the Pontifical Missionary Society (SPM) and the Pontifical Philippine College in Rome will jointly hold a seminar to Celebrate 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines (1521-2021), and reflect on the spirit of mission in the tradition of the Filipino faith and the contribution of the pontifical missionary works.
From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Italian time, the seminar will be held at Filippino College and will be held in English. Given the limited number of participants present, the Seminar will be broadcast live via streaming, open to anyone wishing to participate.
After the introduction by the moderator and organizer, Fr Dinh Anh Nhue Nguyen OFMConv, Secretary General of the Pontifical Missionary Union, Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, should greet the participants at the opening ceremony.
The first thematic talk on “How many missionaries is a Filipino Catholic? Spirit / Consciousness of Mission in the Filipino Faith Tradition”, is given to Fr. Andrew Recepcion, Professor in the Faculty of Missiology, Pontifical Gregorian University . “The Mission in and of the Filipino Diaspora in Italy: An Overview and Reflections on Pastoral Activities”, will be discussed by Fr. Greg Gaston, Rector of the Pontifical Filipino College in Rome.
The second report on “Pontifical missionary works in the Philippines. Brief reflection based on historical data and pastoral experiences” will be presented, in connection with the Philippines, by Bishop Socrates C. Mesiona, MSP, DD, Vicar Apostolic Vicariate Apostolic of Puerto Princesa, president of the episcopal mission commission.
“PMS projects for the promotion of faith and mission in Philippine society”, by Fr. Esteban U. Lo, LRMS, national director of pontifical missionary works in the Philippines, followed by the contributions of the international secretariats of the PMS to the ‘Philippine Church.
The closing speech will be given to His Excellency Bishop Giovanni Pietro Dal Toso, Assistant Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and President of the Pontifical Missionary Works. (Agenzia Fides, 10/27/2021)
