Students return to class

July 28, 2022

Schools in the region are already back in session or will be in the coming weeks. The 2022-23 school year appears, at least at the time of this writing, to be the first full year of “normal” schooling since the 2020-21 pandemic.
Currently, schools in the Indianapolis metro area have not issued mask mandates for students or staff, although schools are encouraging the use of masks for those with compromised autoimmune systems or who are otherwise particularly vulnerable to complications from COVID-19. There is no mask requirement for school buses. However, individual schools can issue mask mandates if the new variants catch on.
Backpacks and more are provided to help students prepare for the upcoming school year. On Saturday, July 30, Grace Apostolic Church will hold its giveaway at the school, 649 E. 22nd St. from 7-4 p.m. The Indianapolis Urban League will be hosting a block party and giveaway on Saturday, July 30 at 777 Indiana Ave. from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. which includes free haircuts and health checks, food, etc. Westminster Neighborhood Services will host a back to school on Saturday July 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a free lunch served at 10.30 a.m. and a distribution of supplies, backpacks, uniforms and more.
School buses will also be on the roads to transport children to and from school and after-school activities. Drivers are urged to be extra vigilant and review school bus stopping laws. Motorists must stop when a bus is stopped with flashing red lights and its stop arm is activated. Motorists should also stop if traveling in the same direction as the school bus on a dual carriageway. If there is no barrier or division, motorists must stop in all directions. In 2019, the state imposed tougher penalties on drivers who overtake school buses with flashing lights and extended stop arms.
Motorists are encouraged to note the location of school zones ahead of school, and law enforcement will patrol to ensure drivers maintain lower speed limits in these zones. Heavy penalties are provided for speeding in school zones.
