  • ‘Sister Wives’ star Christine Brown has said she and her ex, Kody Brown, are “divorced.”

  • His estranged sister, Robyn, believes the two are still together because of the family’s faith.

  • But Christine said she no longer practices the same religion as Kody.

“Kody and I Are Divorcing,” “Sister Wives” star Christine Brown told TLC “Sister Wives: Couples” host Sukanya Krishnan on the second-part tell-all special, which aired Sunday night.

Christine’s ex-sister wife, Robyn, has a slightly different take on the matter. Robyn, who is Kody’s fourth wife and the only one he’s legally married to, explained, “Christine says they’re divorced. And technically, in my head, they’re not…because their marriage was celebrated by our church leaders and did not grant them a divorce.”

“Sister Wives” began filming in 2009 and premiered its first episode on TLC in 2010. The show follows Kody and his wives as they navigate the dynamics within their polygamous family. When the show premiered, Kody and all of his wives were members of the Apostolic United Brethren (AUB), a fundamentalist sect of the Mormon Church, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

Although they barely refer to their faith by name on “Sister Wives,” Kody, Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn have repeatedly explained that they believe practicing polygamy will lead them to the au beyond, where they will remain linked.

Christine distanced herself from this faith in her interview with Krishnan, explaining that polygamous wives are “not trapped”. She said that if a couple wants to end their union, often referred to as a “spiritual marriage”, they must go through the “proper channels” to obtain a “release”.

“Well, I haven’t been a member of this church for a long time,” she said, adding that she “doesn’t care” what the AUB “ecclesiastical authorities” decide on the status of her. marriage.

“I just think God is fine if I just want to be happy,” she continued.

Kody said he was “comfortable” with his ex’s changed beliefs. “She is free from this yellow of bondage, if you will,” he told Krishnan.

Although she is moving on from her marriage to Kody, Christine is sensitive to the effect her choice had on Robyn and the rest of her family, calling her ex-sister “very nice”.

“Deep down, I just want people to be happy and I just want people to feel loved,” Christine said. “But I knew I was making a decision that would break hearts. And it tore me apart and it was super, super sad.”

Part three of “Sister Women: Couples” airs Sunday, February 20 at 10 a.m. TLC.
