Every year on April 24, hundreds of thousands of Armenian Americans and supporters gather in Los Angeles and around the world to raise awareness and bring attention to the Armenian Genocide.

In 1915, 1.5 million Armenians were killed at the hands of the Ottoman Empire, which is now modern Turkey. Since then, Turkey has denied its acts of genocide, and it wasn’t until 2021 that President Joe Biden became the first US president to officially acknowledge the genocide.

Its recognition follows an intense war between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, also known as Artsakh.

The community says the purpose of the annual protests is to raise awareness and demand recognition. Even though the U.S. government has acknowledged the genocide, this year the Armenian-American community is calling on Biden to “match his words with actions and take concrete steps to hold Turkey and Azerbaijan accountable for their continued aggression against the Armenian people for almost two years”. from the invasion of Nagorno-Karabakh.”

“We will continue to march in front of the Turkish Consulate; we still call on the Turkish government to accept responsibility for the genocide, pay reparations and bring justice to the Armenian people. There is failure and refusal to do so far from accepting this responsibility and their ongoing campaign of denial in this regard is just one more reason for us to continue our struggle and to march every year and all year to voice these demands,” Nora Hovsepian, President of the Armenian National Committee of the western region of America, says FOX 11.

Sunday, April 24 marks the 107th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Several events will take place across Los Angeles.
