Police confirm killing kidnappers of clerics in Cross River


Cross River police have confirmed killing two of the three alleged kidnappers involved in the kidnapping of four clerics during August.

State Police Commissioner Aminu Alhassan confirmed the killing in Calabar on Sunday.

He said the two suspects were naturalized by an anti-cultist and kidnapping team led by SP Awodi Abdulhameed who carried out a covert operation based on credible intelligence.

“It is true that we have neutralized two kidnapping kingpins involved in the kidnapping of some pastors who went to church planting in Creek Town, Odukpani Local Government Area of ​​the State.

“The two could not make it out alive, while the third, who is now at large, was seriously injured in a gun battle,” he said.

The commissioner called on residents to watch out for anyone injured by gunshots in their community.

“Remember we warned earlier that we would no longer wait for them (criminals) to commit crimes; we will continue to smoke them out of their various camps, hiding places.

“Especially as we have entered ember months, we want to urge law-abiding citizens to be more vigilant and not take safety for granted as it is everyone’s business.

“But as a command we will continue to push for the brand; we will continue to do our best,” he said.

He said the trio had been terrorizing locals for a long time until they were busted by the anti-cult and kidnapping unit.

The four clergymen of the Apostolic Church and three others who had gone to plant churches were removed.

Their captors released them after paying a ransom of 10 million naira.
