Mapostori fight during prayer
VIOLENCE erupted at the headquarters of the Mugodhi Apostolic Shrine in Wedza over the weekend as factions clashed for control of the church.
About 20 Wedza police had to be called in to quell the violence between Washington Mugodhi supporters and those following Aaron Munodawafa, with both sides claiming ownership of the church.
The factional wars follow the death of the church’s founding leader, Tadeau Mugodhi, who was succeeded by his son Washington.
Mashonaland East Provincial Police spokesman Inspector Simon Chazovachii confirmed the incident, adding that investigations were ongoing.
According to police, on February 11, Munodawafa led his followers to the popular gathering known as the Synod, but was denied entry to the shrine by security guards hired by Mugodhi.
Munodawafa then took his followers to Matsine Primary School near the shrine where they spent the night.
The next day, around 600 faction members then returned to the shrine and forced their way in, which sparked the confrontation.
Both parties filed police complaints against each other. -Press day
