Kody Brown is a Mormon
Kody grew up in a traditional Morman lifestyle – which was very strict – until his father felt called to “practice” in his 40s.
“Practicing” means going into polygamy or having more than one wife. Kody chose to follow his father, and now he too has plural marriages – four in fact.
His four wives are Meri, Jenelle, Christine, and Robyn, but since polygamy is not legal in the United States, he is only legally married to his last wife, Robyn.
Kody and his wives belong to the Apostolic United Brethren Church
Kody and his four wives belong to an offshoot of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Their sect, in particular, is called the Apostolic United Brethren Church, which recognizes the Morman Church as a legitimate church but they disagree with the ban on polygamy.
The AUB Church has distanced itself from the FLDS (Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) as it still believes that women must be 18 to marry and can choose their own husband.
Their church believes polygamy is “God’s desire”
The United Brethren Apostolic Church, to which all the Browns belong, believes that polygamy is one of God’s desires.
The AUB believes Mormans should never have banned the practice and should try to do all they can to keep it alive.
However, in their religion, polygamy is only a means, which means women cannot have multiple husbands. The Brown family believes the “gospel” calls for pluralistic marriages to make their families stronger and help them live as God intended.
Kody says the reason he chose to have multiple wives rather than being monogamous is because of his religious principles.
