As I was sipping my morning coffee today, I scrolled through images from Google that speak to the current hypocrisy in the Church and how others in society see it. Undoubtedly, political polarization and hypocrisy paralyze the witness of Christianity. Hypocrisy also drives young people out of the Church in droves.
This image is one of thousands that exposes the infiltration of hypocrisy and right-wing ideology into American Christianity. I could list hundreds of moderate to progressive religious leaders who have helped me move away from the abusive Catholic right and find a healthy and true spirituality. The most important religious leader for me is Pope Francis. Pope Francis is the 266th successor of the Apostle Peter. If you read Matthew chapter 16:17-19, this passage begins the direct apostolic line from the popes to whom we have today, to our current beloved Holy Father.
So I would say that Pope Francis has a lot of authority given that Jesus built the Church on the Rock of Peter where Pope Francis sits today.
What I find particularly funny but surprisingly true are the GOP Jesus memes. Please note that I don’t believe most Republicans are like that, just a cult of diehard MAGA Republicans. Here are a few of my favorites.
Then, to wrap up, I’ll share some final thoughts from my personal blog, and then my favorite video again of the Republican Jesus. The video exposes the hypocrisy in a way that is actually terrifying because it dazzles the truth.
“It is also my analysis of the past 50 years of American history as it relates to the marriage of the political hard right and Christians of
different types, many (not all) white evangelicals, just under half of white American Catholics, and many white High Church Protestants. Yes, there is a huge racial component to voting. In short, many white Christians took the one issue of abortion and a few others related to religious freedoms and sexuality, and used them as weapons to coerce other Christians into voting Republican out of “Christian duty.” to the point of abuse. They did so in exchange for life-saving and security services for millions of Americans over 50: disability, nationalized (unsocialized) health care, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, WIC, food stamps, living wages, gun safety, environmental safety. , etc….and they call these safety nets and safety precautions “socialism” or even “communism”, but we are the richest country in the world that can afford to take care of the most vulnerable in our society, and we can well afford to ensure the safety of our fellow citizens. Yet we reject all of this in the name of unsuccessfully saving the unborn child and voting against the people rather than for the people. The Church/nonprofit cannot and will not do all of these things alone. I know this from serving disabled children in my profession, raising a disabled son for 20 years, and battling Parkinson’s disease myself.
