CHASSELL – Gregory Peterson, 50, a resident of Chassell died on Monday February 28, 2022 at Omega House in Houghton after a short battle with cancer.

He was born on March 20, 1971 in Medina, Ohio, the son of Dale and Karan (Higgins) Peterson. The family resided in Medina and Glen Ellyn, Illinois until they moved to settle in Spring Lake.

Greg attended Westfield Elementary School and Spring Lake High School where he actively played football, the running track and was a member of the National Honors Society, graduating with the class of 1989.

Greg then attended Western Michigan University and Grand Valley State University before moving to Florida to work with the Marriott Group, Baja Beach Club and Zuma Beach Club.

He also worked at Cedar Point Amusement Park. Greg graduated from Muskegon Community College with honors while working as a quality control manager at a screw manufacturing company.

Greg then decided to attend Michigan Technological University focusing on biomedical engineering. After moving to the area, he decided he would rather reside in the Copper Country and the family farm in Chassell and not go to work in the corporate world.

While attending Michigan Tech, Greg began a career in the food industry cooking at Roy’s Bakery and most recently at Gino’s Restaurant in Hancock as a kitchen manager where he found his second family.

Greg enjoyed spending time on the family farm, working on various projects and being the handyman. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching NASCAR and drag racing with his father, golfing and fishing with his brother and uncle.

Before him in death were his maternal and paternal grandparents.

He is survived by: his father, Dale Peterson of Chassell; his mother Karan M. Peterson of Norton Shores; his sisters and brothers, Deborah (Paul) Saarinen of South Range, James (Mary) Knuttila of El Rio, Texas, Donna Lee Peterson of Muskegon, Jeffrey Peterson of Chassell; his nephews Josh Saarinen and Joel (Jamie) Saarinen and their families; his special cousin David (Kelly) Peterson and his family; as well as many other nieces, nephews, cousins ​​and many friends.

A memorial service for Greg will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 7, 2022 at the South Range Apostolic Lutheran Church with Rev. Charles Bylkas officiating.

Greg’s family would like to thank the staff at Maison Omega for the care provided during his stay. In lieu of further expressions of sympathy, the family suggests that memorials be given to the American Cancer Society in memory of Gregory Peterson.
