Kochi: The main archiepiscopal curia of the Syro-Malabar Church on Saturday released an explanatory note on recent developments in the Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly, including the resignation of former Metropolitan Vicar Mar Antony Kariyil.
The memo says those who love the Church welcomed the Vatican’s decision to appoint an apostolic administrator. He adds that the Church was coming out with a clarification since some people who are unhappy with the administration’s new arrangement were creating a smokescreen through various allegations.
According to the note, Mar Kariyil yielded to the constraints of the priests and acted in a manner contrary to the Pope’s clear directives. One can understand that the Vatican saw in this a serious indiscipline.
He said the Apostolic Nuncio inviting Mar Kariyil to Delhi and meeting him later in Kochi were all in line with the Pope’s decisions, made on the basis of reports from the Eastern Congregation and the Secretary of State.
The note also affirmed that the controversial sale of the lands of the archdiocese was done in transparency and with the recognition of canonical bodies, in accordance with all laws.
The note says the amount received through land transactions was only accepted through the Archdiocese’s bank accounts.
Those who call meetings and issue statements, questioning the decision made by the Eastern Congregation and the Pope are committing serious breaches of discipline, the note adds.
The explanatory note is signed by Fr. Vincent Cheruvathoor, Archbishop’s Grand Chancellor. The note comes amid a mass rally called by priests and lay people of the Archdiocese on Sunday at Kaloor Stadium.
