The Catholic Bishops of Malawi gathered in Lilongwe for their first annual plenary, which started yesterday and will continue until Friday, February 4, 2022.
Also present at the conference were the Apostolic Nuncio to Malawi and Malawi, His Excellency, Bishop Gianfranco Gallone and Archbishop Ignatius Chama, Archbishop of Kasama in Zambia, who is also the President of the Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB).
The Secretary General (SG) of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM), an umbrella body of the Catholic Bishops in Malawi, the Most Reverend Fr Dr Henry Saindi, told the Nyasa Times on Tuesday that the meeting will reflect on, among other things, “Protection and Promotion of the Deposits of Faith: Building the Catholic Faith through New and Primary Evangelization”.

Saindi added that the meeting will also review current church liturgical practices; discuss matters relating to priestly formation in spiritual formation centers and major seminaries and receive and discuss the general progress report of the Catholic University of Malawi (CUNIMA), the Nanjiri CUNIMA campus project in the Archdiocese of Lilongwe and the establishment of the College of Health Sciences in the Diocese of Mzuzu.
“He will also receive and discuss progress and status reports from national bodies, organizations and ecumenical bodies such as the Diocesan Catholic Clergy Association of Malawi (ADCCOM); the Association of Malawian Religious (AMRIM); Association of Women in Religious Institutes of Malawi (AWRIM); National Council of Laity, Catholic Women’s Organization, Public Affairs Committee (PAC), Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) and Christian Service Committee (CSC),” he said. declared.
Saindi further indicated that the meeting will deliberate on the progress and status reports of the pastoral, social development, finance, investment and administration directorates of the Catholic Secretariat and the Pontifical Mission Societies, examine and approve the roadmap for the functional review of the Catholic Secretariat, the roadmap for the hosting of the sub-regional conference of Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe in Malawi; receive and discuss progress reports on development projects for the Catholic Secretariat and other national institutions and receive and deliberate reports on governance and socio-economic challenges in the country.
